Entertaiment is the ability to occupy, divert and amuse. It ranges from a private activity like solving the daily crossword puzzle, to elaborate ballroom entertainment, and performances for thousands or even global audiences. Entertainment has a remarkably elastic definition, with activities that were once part of hunting or war developing into spectator sports, and with the capacity for new media to transform familiar forms.
Entertaiment is derived from the Middle French entretenement, which in turn is a contraction of the Latin intertenere and the Indo-European root ten. See also edification, amusement, diversion, and escapism.
